I look back at these photos and for the life of me, I cannot remember the colors of these cities being so vibrant and yet all I see are deep blues and bright pinks and royal purples and once again I fall in love with the region of Catalonia.
After our skydiving adventure and too much rain, we drove through the mountains to visit the towns of Roses, Cadaqués, Port de la Selva, and Girona. Following our short (but very adventurous; i.e. see here for more explanation) time in Empuribrava, we hit the road to explore more of Catalonia. Originally the plan was to spend time in Barcelona, but because we had both been prior, we thought it might be nice to explore some of the coast of Catalonia and the towns close to the French border. And am I ever glad for the change of plans because these places gave me another reason to swoon over Spain.
From the botifarra, a typical Catalan dish, to the human towers called castells, and the many, many flags representing a desire for independence, it was clear what part of Spain we were in. Despite the growing tension throughout the region, and that’s all I will say about it for now, experiencing the culture of the area only enriched our stay.
I am hopeful this won’t be the last time I have an opportunity to explore Catalonia further, but for now, photos…
From what Chus told me, the city of Cadaqués reminded him of Chefchaouen in Morocco and it didn’t take any convincing that Morocco would go on the list of places I want to travel this year. Caught in action…Salvador Dalí has roots in Cadaqués as he visited as a child and later in life owned a home in the town with his wife. The Castellers, a practice steeped richly in tradition, and seen widely throughout Catalonia. I’m often poked fun at, but I won’t ever get over the flowers in this country and so I won’t ever stop taking photos of them.Port de la Selva; where we almost got blown away from the strong winds. Our last stop for the day; Girona. We took the city by foot and explored the city walls and the views and enjoyed a sunny day after so much rain.Isn’t he handsome?
